The symptoms of a yeast infection typically occur in the vaginal area. Diagnosis can be complex because the symptoms could indicate several different types of infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or cystitis. The following are the most common symptoms associated with infections, and how to tell whether it or not they are caused by yeast overgrowth.
Vaginal discharge
A difference in vaginal discharge is one of the primary symptoms. Each women produces a different amount of discharge during the monthly cycle, and ovulation generally brings out distinct changes. However, a yeast infection discharge is a bit different, as it's more thick and creamy than normal. Many describe it as having a cottage cheese type appearance.
If the discharge has the smell of yeast, then this is another good indicator of a yeast infection. It's not necessarily unpleasant though, as it really mimics the smell of bread. These two symptoms are the ones to be aware of as they strongly indicate the presence of an infection.
Burning sensation
Because a burning sensation while urinating is also associated with cystitis, women often assume that's what they have. However, this may or may not be true. Cystitis and yeast infections share many of the same symptoms, which is why they are often confused for one another.
Pain during urination is also a possible sign of several sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Should you be experiencing this, then visit a doctor as soon as possible. The results of a urine sample and a swab test will tell the story.
Vaginal discomfort
Vaginal soreness and itching, in addition to pain while urinating, are two other possible symptoms. The pernium and the vaginal opening are frequently the areas most affected. This discomfort can really be tough to deal with, and the natural inclination might be to scratch that area. However, doing so will only aggravate the symptoms that much more and to further spread.
Treatment
If the yeast infection is bad enough, then medication or over-the-counter-treatment may be necessary. However, this will typically only provide short-term results and the chances of it returning are better than not. Treating the root of the problem is the best long-term solution. Yeast infections can stem from lifestyle habits, such as eating a diet high in sugar. Eating healthier will starve the yeast and boost your immune system in the process, helping prevent the infection from coming back again in the future.
Please Help! 8 months, itchy jock area. Not Yeast Infection, not “Jock Itch”?
I have had minor itching in my jock area for nearly a year. It doesn’t look like anything. There are no bumps, no scaling, no redness, no visible signs whatsoever. It just itches a little, and if I scratch too much, it does get raw (obviously).
I saw a doctor after about 6 months, and he didn’t know what it was, as he couldn’t see anything. He prescribed topical antifungals, just in case it was jock itch. I used them for 2 weeks, and it didn’t help at all. All it did was make it itch more, as the area was greasy with ointment all the time.
I’ve tried the following:
- Keeping it moist and not scratching
- Keeping it dry and not scratching
- Gold bond lotion
- Gold bond powder
- Carmex / Neosporin
- Prescription antifungals
It simply will not heal. However, it does slowly migrate front to back. Sometimes it will be closer to the base of the scrotum. Sometimes it will be closer to the anus. This suggests to me that it can heal, if I just left it alone long enough.
My latest crazy idea is that it may be related to antibiotics/probiotics. I was on Doxycycline in November, which was shortly before the issue started. Maybe it’s related to a beneficial bacterial deficit, and probiotics could help?
Information strongly suggests it is not one of the three common causes; not a Yeast Infection, not a fungal infection (jock itch), not an STD (full screening, all negative, and no visible signs).
It’s mildly annoying, but mostly harmless. I just want it to go away, and I feel like I’ve tried everything. And I feel like, if I go to the doc again, they’ll just bill me for looking and saying “I don’t see anything”.
Has anyone had any experience with persistent itchy skin, not related to Yeast Infection, Jock Itch, or STD?
Some additional info:
- I’m 30 years old
- I’ve had exceptional health all my life; never hospitalized for any condition more serious than a tonsillectomy
- The itching started while I was on vacation. I was “bumming” it around my house that week, playing video games, eating greasy food, and not showering as frequently as I usually do. The area was likely sweatier and warmer than usual during this time.
- It seems like the skin on my face has been more red and sensitive and flaky during the past year as well. This could be my imagination, or it could be an unrelated change due to diet, environment, or simply getting older.
- In the past couple years, I’ve started developing minor allergies (hey fever, etc) which I’ve never had before. I attribute this to aging.
- In December, I started dating my current girlfriend. She has cystic fibrosis, and as a result, has persistent bacterial infections in her lungs, and frequent bouts of Candidiasis (yeast infection). I did have what appeared to be Thrush in early January (oral Yeast Infection), but no visible yeast symptoms in the jock area, which suggests it’s not YI related.
Can a yeast infectiOn be an early sign of pregnancy?
I have missed 4 days of my expected period days so I think I may be pregnant I’m not sure though. I do know that I have a yeast infection and going to see the doctor thurs about it. But could this be a symptom of pregnancy? Also can a yeast infection delay your period if your not in medications for it yet?
It is one of the first early symptoms of pregnancy, I’ve been trying and got excited with my last one hoping it meant pregnant but I wasn’t
I’ve never had one delay my period but that doesn’t mean it can’t. Take a home test you’ll need to know for the doctor anyway so he can properly treat you. If you aren’t trying to get pregnant you may want an STD screening. Sexually transmitted diseases CAN mess up your period and have similar symptoms to a yeast infection.
Could a yeast infection be a sign of early pregnancy ? I’m also experiencing pregnancy symptoms…?
I had unprotected sex on April 30, which was 2 days after my period & I believe he came inside me. The very next day we had unprotected sex again and he ejaculated outside of me & didnt put it back in. Then about on May 12 we had unprotected sex again; he ejaculated outside of me but this time he put it back in afterwards. There is a chance I could have gotten pregnant each time.
Last week I started getting feelings as if I was about to start my period. Mostly a lot of bowel movements, cramping, tiredness, very hungry & a lot of creamy white discharge that looks like lotion. It also feels like my period is about to start – I would feel down there expecting to see blood but I would never get blood, just white discharge that has no odor and no itch. However, today I think I have a yeast infection because the discharge has turned clumpy. But I was having all these pregnancy symptoms…so could I be pregnant & could this yeast infection just be because of my change in hormones? Im not 100% sure if it is a yeast infection but it feels like one, but im still experiencing cramping & all that so i wonder if Im pregnant.
Is a yeast infection an early sign of pregnancy or symptom?
okay so I have been having been trying to conceive for the past 4 months and I just found out I have a yeast infection and I was wondering if this may be a pregnancy sign or symptom. If so when should I test.
Thank you, Monica
Hello,
If you are trying to conceive and you and your partner are being more active than usual, you are porobably producing a large amount of normal discharge. When you have continous white discharge and consistent sex and and cause to much yeast to build up and cause a yeast infection. If you are trying to conceive, I would take a test twice a month. Why wait, guess, and ask questions when it’s just $20 away from knowing.
If this is however a yeast infection, I would call my OBGYN and make an appointment to do a pap smear and get treatment to confirm it’s yeast infection. Then I would ask whats a safe to be active and control my yeast infections.
During the time your conceivng, take sits bath, use wipes after using the bathroom, and keep that area dry.
10dpo, temp is down, no real PMS symptoms or pregnancy symptoms – Clomid cycle – yeast infection?
I’m 10dpo, my temp has been down the past two days. I’m not reading too much into that since there are still 3 more days to my luteal phase. Last cycle on 11dpo it was this low and dropped way below my coverline on 12dpo. So I’m hoping to see a rebound tomorrow.
I’ve been testing early with internet cheapies, BFN this morning. Not taking it to heart though since I know I’m testing early.
Last Clomid cycle I had sore breasts and other pms/pregnancy signs for the week leading up to my period coming. This time, my breasts are slightly tender, but its barely noticeable and even have no tenderness at all in the morning. No other pms symptoms.
I did just get a yeast infection (diagnosed by my doc this morning), very mild. I know it can be caused by the high estrogen levels in pregnancy but the Clomid also causes high estrogen so it may have been the real culprit. This is the first yeast infection I’ve ever had in my life.
I don’t have high hopes, but just the lack of PMS symptoms and the yeast infection are getting me excited with the possibilities.
I know better, I really do, I just can’t help but think about this. I really thought I was getting better control over my excitement and over-analysis this time. I only have a few more days to go, I just can’t help myself. Any thoughts? Any experiences like this?
i have heard that the temps dip down when you have implantation.but as you said it might be because of estrogen too…good luck and baby dust to you :
