What is a yeast infection?
It is a common bacterial infection caused by the bacteria candida albicans. It is considered normal flora as it is found in small amounts in all women especially in the vagina.
According to statistics, about three in every four women will have a yeast infection in their lifetime. Several factors can contribute to the appearance of a yeast infection and these include pregnancies, diabetes, and the use of medications like oral contraceptives, antibiotics and steroids.
It is also common after menopause because of decreasing estrogen levels with thinning of the vaginal walls.
How do you know you have a yeast infection?
Some of the symptoms to watch out for include: a thick, white, and odorless discharge from the vagina, a burning sensation during urination, itching and burning inside and outside the vagina, and slight pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
If you notice any of this, it can be embarrassing to talk about such things to anyone including your doctor. So here are a few home remedies that can be used to treat this condition.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
This is a natural bacteria fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and elements necessary for a vital body. Its a common yeast infection home remedy and it works by adding about 1 cups of apple cider vinegar into lukewarm bath water and then soaking in it for 20 minutes. This should be done the first three days.
After the first three days, the infection should be reduced significantly. You can now mix 1 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, which should be used as a vaginal douche twice a day up til 5 days. Expect to feel a slight sting once you start using it.
After several days of douching, begin to drink a glass of water mixed with I teaspoon of the apple cider vinegar once a day. This helps to not only prevent yeast infections, but also to boost your metabolism and keep your skin looking healthy.
If you are pregnant, please contact your doctor before beginning this treatment.
2. Tea Tree Oil
Also known as melaleuca, this is a light yellow oil that almost has a similar scent to nutmeg. It is known as a natural antibacterial disinfectant used by the aborigines for thousands of years. Its benefits are tremendous, including being able to cure infections like acne, rashes, blisters and of course yeast infections.
To use combine 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil with 1 teaspoon of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Mix the solution. When done it should appear milky white. Store this mixture in a dropper bottle.
Add ten drops of this to a pint of water, then douche the vagina with this mixture once a day for an entire week. It is not recommended to use this product if youre pregnant, so be sure to consult your doctor first.
3. Yogurt
Yogurt contains natural bacterial fighting agents, which is why most people have relied on it as a useful yeast infection home remedy. Dip a tampon into plain and unsweetened yogurt and then insert into vagina. Repeat this twice a day until the infection goes away.
In addition, try adding yogurt to your daily diet to prevent future yeast infections.

QUESTION:
How to treat and prevent a yeast infection (home remedy)?
I had a yeast infection before and I simply treated it with the medication pill you can buy at the store. They're really expensive and I just started feeling somewhat uncomfortable down there again. I need a home remedy because I do not have that extra money right now. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Well people seem to think putting a clove of garlic up there helps. Obviously take it out as well, but you have a chance of not getting it back out again. Maybe contacting your doctor for home remedy's would help.

QUESTION:
Yeast infection home remedy question about yogurt?
I hear you are supposed to soak a tampon in plain unsweetened yogurt and do this twice daily to make your yeast infection go away, but my question is...Exactly how long should I keep the tampon in?
-
ANSWER:
i dont think that using soaked tampon is good idea!!!if you really want to get rid of yeast infection then you must follow these tips:
1) Eat yogurt!!!! It contains helpful bacteria (live cultures, including acidophilus and bifidus) that destroy yeast. Use only plain yogurt with active cultures.
2) Douche with a solution of 1 to 3 tbsp. vinegar in a quart of water. Repeat once a day while having symptoms, but no longer than a week.
3) Decrease or eliminate sugar and sugary foods. Sugar promotes yeast growth.
4) Use a garlic clove as a suppository. Garlic contains a natural anti-fungal agent.
5) Try gentian violet. It's a traditional remedy for yeast and other infections, and can be found in pharmacies. Swab the area with it once or twice a day. Make sure to use a thick pad - it stains everything.
6) Use an herbal douche. Combine equal amounts of sage, raspberry and comfrey with 1/4 part goldenseal. This can be combined with cider vinegar.
7) You must use herbal treatment. In that case Yeastrol is really good (probably the best) product that gets rid of yeast infection comparatively fast and makes you feel more confident knowing that it wont reappear again!
And of course it is better if you use full course (5 months - if I remember correctly). For me it worked very fast + I dont get yeast infections anymore (almost 2 years) ...

QUESTION:
Yeast infection home remedy help?
So while looking up home remedies for yeast infections, I came across the hydrogen peroxide method (wash/rinse with a mix of 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup of water) so I decided to give it a shot. I've done it for three days, and it does lessen the discomfort, but I'm not sure that it is actually removing the infection.
I also found a yogurt remedy (eating any yogurt with live cultures and applying plain yogurt to the affected area) that had wonderful reviews.
I wanted to know if I can try the yogurt remedy after I've already started the hydrogen peroxide one. Any ideas? Also, sorry about the repost, I meant to put it in alternative medicine the first time, and I can't figure out how to delete the old one from my iPod.

ANSWER:
Where is the yeast infection? Is this an oral infection? This is usually caused by Candida spp. Nystain or miconazole gel would work well.If you have a local infection elsewhere such as a vaginal infection, nothing you consume (apart from an oral anti-fungal) is going to have any effect. And don't use hydrogen peroxide.
You need an anti-fungal. See your Doctor.
Although live yoghurt is often recommended, the evidence base is weak.
